Two years ago, we had a couple trying desperately to get into their own place. Between car repair challenges, being able to stay employed while living in their car…you get the picture. One thing after another became very discouraging. I remember their was nothing set up in services to get this couple on their feet. Though they tried and tried they kept running into road blocks.
I remember they were told they had a place waiting for them, but they needed $100 to cover the their application fee to secure a place. If this didn’t work out, they would continue to stay on the streets. They couldn’t get ahead, no matter how hard they tried.
I did something that day that I never had done before and haven’t done since. I planted seed. I had become so frustrated at seeing people work so hard and not get anywhere. So, I decided to give them the money to grab that apartment. I even had the husband sign a note to promise to pay it forward. Today, the money came back to me and I was reminded by the husband to “Pay it forward.”
Two years later, that seed that was planted has grown. Through many tears and prayer, we have seen more people than ever before housed or placed in recovery homes until they are ready to make it on their own. More people are finding their way off the streets. More families united. More people learning to love themselves…because God loves them.
Don’t ever give up. “Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
